The Value of Being Resourceful as an Entrepreneur and Business Owner

Resourcefulness is the heartbeat of Entrepreneurship. It’s the art of finding ways to leverage what you HAVE to create what you NEED.

It’s also vital skill for anyone looking to thrive in BOTH business and life.

As Entrepreneurs and Business Owners, the ability to be resourceful can mean the difference between surviving and thriving.

So, what does it mean to be a resourceful person?

A resourceful person can solve problems quickly and creatively, make effective use of available resources and adapt to changing circumstances.

Resourceful people possess a combination of ingenuity, flexibility, and practicality that allows them to navigate challenges and seize opportunities with minimal resources. This ability to think outside the box and leverage what's at hand is the key to being resourceful.

Why is resourcefulness so important in business, for YOU?

In business, resourcefulness is crucial because it enables you to navigate the often unpredictable and challenging landscape of business with agility and creativity. In an environment where resources such as time, money, and manpower are often limited, the ability to make the most out of what's available for you is invaluable. As a resourceful Entrepreneur, you can find innovative solutions to problems, adapt to changing market conditions, and seize opportunities that others might overlook.

This mindset not only helps in overcoming immediate obstacles but also models a mindset of continuous improvement and innovation for your Team, which is essential for long-term success.

Moreover, resourcefulness builds resilience. Entrepreneurs and Business Owners who are adept at being resourceful are better equipped to handle setbacks and failures. You have the ability to see challenges as opportunities for growth, rather than insurmountable barriers. This resilience is key to sustaining a business through tough times, empowering you to bounce back from difficulties with stronger strategies and renewed vigor.

Why is resourcefulness so important in life, for YOU?

Similar to in your business, resourcefulness enables you to effectively navigate and overcome challenges in life. Drawing on creativity and critical thinking, resourcefulness helps you find solutions to problems even when resources are limited. This skill allows you to adapt to changing circumstances, make the most of what you have, and turn obstacles into opportunities. Whether it's managing a personal crisis, optimizing your daily routines, or achieving long-term goals, resourcefulness equips you with the mindset to thrive.

In addition, resourcefulness promotes resilience and self-reliance. When faced with difficulties, resourceful individuals are less likely to feel overwhelmed, defeated or alone. Instead, they approach problems with a proactive and positive attitude, confident in their ability to find a way forward. This resilience helps you bounce back from setbacks and build a stronger, more adaptable character.

Resourcefulness allows you to see that you always have a choice in the outcome of your circumstances, which ultimately leads to showing up as a more empowered, confident version of YOU.

Now that you know what it means to be resourceful, and you know why it's important in business and life, how do you develop this skill and become more resourceful?

Here are some steps you can take to become a more resourceful person:

  1. Consider your Current & Future Reality:
    • Where do you fall on the spectrum from NOT resourceful (0) to VERY MUCH resourceful (10)?
      • Give yourself a numerical rating.
    • Depending where you are, decide where you want to be.
      • Give that future YOU a numerical rating.
  2. Create an Actionable Plan: (here are a few ideas to get you started)
    • Whenever a problem or challenge arises, implement a NEW practice of brainstorming solutions for 10-15 minutes before deciding on next steps.
      • You have all the wisdom you need within yourself already.
    • Before first asking someone else for help, implement a NEW practice of investing 10-15 minutes to find the answer or a solution yourself.
      • You are more capable than you know.
    • Before spending your hard-earned money on a solution, implement a NEW practice of looking for 4 other options that may be at a lower cost.
      • Or look for options that are 100% free.
    • Before buying something new, implement a NEW practice of waiting 24hrs to see if an existing resource fills the need
      • That new "something" may no longer be needed after 24hrs.
    • If you're facing the same struggles over and over again, invest in a training course or book to upgrade your skills and solve the problem yourself.
      • Knowledge is power.
    • If outside help is needed, leverage your network of friends, family and colleagues first. They may accept payment in the form of drinks, dinner or a $ for $ barter deal.
      • Helpful people are everywhere.
    • What other actionable things can you do to be more resourceful?
  3. Choose 1 of the ideas above (or an idea of your own making) and create a NEW habit, standard or routine:
    • Habit: something you do on a regular basis that leads to a bigger outcome (daily or weekly)
    • Standard: the benchmark you set for the quality of your behaviors and actions (standards begin with "I am someone who...")
    • Routine: a set of habits batched together to help organize your time and create efficiency (for ex: brainstorm, research, phone a friend)
  4. Create a reminder of your NEW intention for becoming more resourceful:
    • Schedule your NEW habit
    • Create a visual reminder of your UPGRADED standard
    • Schedule your NEW routine
  5. Take Action!
    • Inch by inch, it's a cinch.
    • Begin taking consistent action towards your intentions.
    • Consider thinking about your improvement through this lens: how can I raise my resourcefulness rating (from above) just 1 point in the next 30 days?
    • Stay committed and give yourself grace. If you set an intention and fall off the wagon, get back on. Every day is a NEW day!
