Have a More Enjoyable Holiday Season

Are you scurrying around gathering gifts and decking your halls? 'Tis the season for hustle and bustle. Take a little pause to prime yourself emotionally and mentally, so that you can have a more enjoyable holiday season.

Here are 3 simple steps you can take to approach each day with a more positive, optimistic mindset:

1. IMAGINE

I encourage you to start and end each day visualizing WHO you want to be as you engage with others around you this holiday season. Dream for 3-5 minutes about your ideal day, down to the looks on other people's faces and the feel of a warm embrace. Notice- how do you feel as a result? Studies show that your brain cannot discern between reality and imagination. Play with it! What have you got to lose?

2. BELIEVE

If you BELIEVE life is good, it more than likely will be. And the same is true for the opposite (life is bad, stressful, overwhelming). What I know for sure is the stories we tell ourselves have power. Be mindful to CHOOSE a good feeling "story". If you’re not feeling “in the mood” to be positive or happy, think about a “mood booster.”

Mood Boosters are those happy memories you hold closest to your heart. These memories are with you every day, you just get busy and forget they’re available as a tool to help BOOST your mood (which is why mindfulness is so VITAL). Next time you’re feeling low, frustrated or bitter, be aware in that moment of your negative emotions. Then, CHOOSE a mood booster. Take a few deep breaths. Close your eyes. Draw the memory to the forefront of your mind and smile. Start to recall the memory in great detail. Use as many of your senses as possible to bring you back to that moment. Notice positive sensations take over your mind and body. And say THANK YOU.

3. RECEIVE

I am a HUGE fan of the law of attraction: that which is like unto is self is drawn. In other words: like attracts like. The tricky part is this applies to both positive and negative things (which is why our beliefs and stories have such great impact on our daily lives). A simple shift you can make is seeing challenges, struggles and kerfluffles as opportunities for growth. Once you ACCEPT that life is happening FOR you (not to you), you will shift you into a state of ALLOWING (and away from a state of resisting). Allowing and accepting are positive attraction forces. Once you those forces are deeply rooted into WHO you are, life just magically gets easier.
